Longer odds do not remove uncertainty.

A roughie is a longer-priced horse. Understanding the price is different from having evidence that the horse is a good selection.

Price, probability and potential return

Decimal odds combine the returned stake and potential profit. As a simple illustration, decimal odds of 10.00 imply a break-even win probability of 1 ÷ 10, or 10%, before accounting for the market margin. This is an explanation of odds, not an estimate for any horse or a claim that the market probability is correct.

A possible improvement needs evidence

Ask which circumstances differ from earlier runs: distance, class, track conditions or the likely position in running. Identify the recorded evidence for each factor. A horse having an excuse last start does not establish that it will improve next start, and several speculative assumptions do not become stronger evidence when combined.

Value cannot be read from the payout alone

A longer price can reflect a smaller chance of success. Calling a selection value requires a defensible probability assessment, not simply noticing a large payout. The uncertainty in that assessment matters. Where it cannot be supported, describe the risk rather than claiming an edge.

Win and place are different outcomes

A place is not a win. Each-way terms and the number of paid places vary with the market and race conditions. Check the actual terms rather than assuming that a horse recorded as placed produced a particular return. A public win/place record is not the same as a profit or return-on-investment calculation.

Expect losses, and read the whole record

Longer-priced selections can have extended losing runs. Do not increase stakes to recover losses. The public racing results distinguish wins, places, losses and excluded outcomes; the recent Best Pick list is not a complete roughie history.
